Toronto will be spared the shame of Ford Square

Next time you think that complaining on social media never gets anything done, consider that Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has suddenly changed its mind when it comes to the renaming Maple Leaf Square. After reports surfaced last week that the company had sold the naming rights to the fan-oriented space to Ford, the reaction was swift and damning.

Whether it was because it seemed like the space was being named after our troubled mayor or because the perfectly appropriate current name was set to be corporately branded in the most explicit of ways, a collective groan was sighed -- one loud enough that the folks at Ford and MLSE noticed.

Maple Leaf Square will not be renamed Ford Square. Instead, the Leafs announced yesterday that the corporate re-branding will be known as the Ford Fan Zone at Maple Leaf Square. That's a mouthful, but it's still better than the alternative. And besides, no one's going to call it anything other than its original name anyway, so best to keep that in there in some official way (lest we repeat the SkyDome/Rogers Centre disaster).
