Shake Shack has officially landed in Toronto, taking over a prime piece of real estate at the corner of Yonge and Dundas.

This is the first Canadian location for the New York-based fast food chain that's garnered considerable hype since its founding in 2004.

While Toronto certainly isn't running low on fast food chains, the news of the American chain breaking ground in the city — and the Canadian market at large — caused huge excitement around the city, and I can't say the hype was undue.

The restaurant space itself is beautiful — an fry oil-smelling oasis amid the general chaos and grit of Yonge-Dundas Square just beyond the doors. 

The chain collaborated with a slew of local businesses not only on sourcing ingredients and menu items (more on that later), but on its interiors, too — the restaurant features playful artwork by Toronto artist Briony Douglas.

The menu at Shake Shack is standard for any burger chain, with six different burger offerings, fries (which can be topped with cheese and bacon), chicken burgers and nuggets, hot dogs and, yes, milkshakes, alongside frozen custards, concretes (their take on a DQ Blizzard) and beverages.

As far as smash burgers in Toronto go, Shake Shack's ShackBurger ($8.49), which is made from 100 per cent Canadian beef, can stand up to the best of them, adorned quite simply with cheese, lettuce, tomato and — a must for any burger chain — their signature sauce.

For vegetarians, their 'Shroom Burger ($10.99), a fried portabella mushroom stuffed with molten melted cheese and topped with the standard fixins should do the trick.

Shake Shack also offers a selection of chicken-based sandwiches, such as the Chicken Shack ($9.49), where a crispy fried chicken breast is paired with lettuce, pickles and a surprisingly refreshing buttermilk herb mayo.

The Toronto location of Shake Shack is liquor licensed, and has partnered up with Bellwoods Brewery to offer a signature Shackmeister Ale ($7.99), as well as Niagara's Rosewood Estates on a Shack White Riesling and Shack Red blend ($11.99).

You don't have to opt for alcohol, of course. They also offer a standard selection of soft drinks, fresh lemonade and iced tea made from Toronto's Pluck Teas ($2.99 for a small).

Alongside the tried-and-true rotation of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cookies and cream and Black & White milkshakes, the location is also offering a Toronto exclusive Maple Salted Pretzel Shake ($7.29), which gives a quick hit of quintessentially Canadian sweetness with a small, salty kick.

Joining the lineup of Toronto-based businesses in supporting roles at Shake Shack, the Canadian exclusive Shack Attack Concrete ($6.49) includes chocolate chunks from Chocosol, while the I Heart Butter Tart Concrete ($6.49) features butter tarts from Brodflour.

Shake Shack is located at 10 Dundas East and officially opens to the public on June 13 at 11 a.m.
