The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Shawn Clarke, "In Transit"

Shawn Clarke returns with a new five-track EP Stray Birds. The new EP includes the lonesome song, "In Transit" where Clarke romanticizes (as he often does) the things he observes on a bus and drifts into a soft ditty - a souvenir of his travels.

Track #2: Fucked Up, "I Hate Summer"

Download the new Fucked Up song "I Hate Summer" here (via Stereogum). The emphatic two-minute track loses no momentum. It rouses you right from the moment it fades in, the song widening with the blistering fury of riffs, and thrashing in whiskey-burned, high-wired vocal growls.

Track #3: Diamond Rings, "Mellow Doubt (Teenage Fanclub Cover)"

Diamond Rings shakes up the Teenage Fanclub pop ballad "Mellow Doubt", adapting the guitar-driven original into a soft electronic dance track, churning with piano and shimmering synths.

Track #4: Odonis Odonis, "Handlebars"

"Handlebars" warms your blood with sun-baked surf-rock chops and a stream of heavy distortion that mesmerizes and multiplies into disorienting textures.

Track #5: Maylee Todd, "Hieroglyphics"

Maylee Todd wants you to form a Soul Train line to accompany with her soulful new song "Hieroglyphics", a retro disco-funk number you can download for free here.
