7 Foods You Should Not Keep in The Refrigerator

Refrigerating is a proven means of preserving the lifespan of perishable foods, like fish, meat, fruits, vegetable etc. In fact, this is one of the major reasons people buy a refrigerator, especially people who sell seafood. However, not all foodstuff can be kept in the refrigerator as they lose their taste, nutrients, flavour, texture, etc. To buttress this better, here is a list of seven foods you should not keep in the refrigerator.

  1. Tomatoes

Storing tomatoes in the refrigerator will damage its membrane because tomatoes are not good in a cold environment. It makes it watery and also changes color after cooked finish. It is better when you store your Tomatoes in paper bags, a big bowl or net baskets where there is enough ventilation. You don’t need to watch it before storing it because the dampness will make it spoil fast.

  1. Bread

I once visited my friend who entertained me with bread. I was surprised when she brought out the bread from the refrigerator. However, I eat the bread like that, but later told her that it is not good to refrigerate bread. Putting bread in the fridge is wrong, and all it does is to make the bread lose its original taste and texture, which will result to staleness.

  1. Unripe Bananas

There is nothing wrong in keeping ripe bananas in the refrigerator, however, unripe bananas should be kept in the refrigerator. Keeping it in the fridge will make it turn black. Instead of keeping unripe bananas in the refrigerator, you can keep it inside a sack for some days.

  1. Potatoes

Potatoes are an example of tuber crops that are vital for human consumption. However, for equitable distribution preservation becomes inevitable. Don’t store your Potatoes in the refrigerator; instead, keep them in the pantry, paper bags or in a cool, dry place. It is also advisable not to wash potatoes before storing as this may lead to spoilage before serving its purpose.

  1. Oil

It is not a good idea to keep oil inside the fridge. This palm oil, vegetable oil, olive oil, etc. keeping oil in the refrigerator will make it condense and form like butter. It also loses its nutrient. Instead, you can always keep it in a cool and dark place.

  1. Onions

Onions, generally, are not good in a cold environment, especially in an environment that is as cold as a refrigerator. The coldness will soften the moisture and make it mushy. Instead, you can keep them dry and well-ventilated area.

  1. Honey

Storing honey in the refrigerator in the refrigerator will make it crystal and form grainy and lumpy. Instead, keep in a cool and dry place. Ensure it is closed properly.
