Sex Film Festival

Sex-themed film festival debuts in Toronto

The Keyhole Sessions has decided to spice up Sunday nights in March with their first ever Sex+ Film Festival. TKS is a community of models, artists, and photographers who look to kick life drawing and photography up a notch with unconventional poses and accessories. They've decided to challenge convention yet again with their new film festival. Sex+, commonly understood to mean sex positive, in this case, also means sex plus. This film festival is about showing a few of the themes that sex can couple with, and showing that sex is not a topic that needs to be shied away from.

The festival kicked off this past Sunday night with Steven Shainberg's Secretary, a romantic comedy about a dominant/submissive relationship. The film exemplifies the theme of the night, sex+power, as Lee Holloway, a young secretary, and E. Edward Grey, Lee's boss, gradually come to terms with the fact that they are in a BDSM relationship.

There are three more films to be shown this month, and of course, three more sex+ themes. Next Sunday's film, Sirens, a film about a young minister and wife who visit an artist and the three libertine models living with him, champions the theme of sex+art.

On March 20th, TKS will be showing Diary of a Nymphomaniac, a memoir of a French girl's sexual encounters and experiences with love and loss, for the classic theme of sex+sex.

Finally on March 27, 9 Songs, a love story that unfolds over a series of rock concerts, featuring some pretty sensual encounters, will close the festival with the theme sex+music.

I have to say, the Sex+ Film Festival was not a bad way to spend a below-zero Sunday night in March. Plus, since The Royal Cinema is in the heart of Little Italy, there are dozens of great places to go for dinner and drinks before or after the film. I myself jumped on the late-night opportunity to get into Utopia without waiting in line!

The Sex+ Film Festival runs every Sunday in March. All screenings will take place at The Royal Cinema, 608 College Street. Mingling starts at 6:30pm, and the show starts at 7:00pm. Tickets are $12 at the door.
