If the Academy Awards and the multiple international accolades weren't proof enough, I've got more proof that people all around the world love Canadian short film.

The winners of this year's Filminute festival were announced earlier today, and while the big winner of the night was Kristina Grozeva from Bulgaria's Game, Canadian Zach Math and Jonah Bekhor's film Egg Love was one of five films to receive a special Jury Commendation.

Filminute is the international one-minute film festival that challenges filmmakers, writers, animators, artists, designers, and creative producers to develop and submit the world's best one-minute films. With only 60 seconds — no more, no less — to tell a story, creating a successful film for the Filminute festival is no easy task.

Over 800 films were screened as part of Filminute this year, and 25 of those films were put on a shortlist and eligible for festival awards. Of the 25 films on the shortlist, six of them are created or co-created by Canadians: Dave Foley and Fans, Dedication, Egg Love, First Bloom, Global Warming Vacation, and Le Fil Rouge.

Philip Brown from Toronto recently reviewed some of the shortlisted films (including two of the Canadian films) and his six top picks are featured on Eye Weekly. You can still view, rate, and leave comments on each of the shortlisted films on the Filminute site.
