Darfur Takes Centre Stage in Toronto

As the crisis in Darfur drags on, a number of art and film related happenings kick off this Saturday to raise awareness and hopefully galvenize more people to do something about it.

The first event, Darfur/Darfur is a provocative photography exhibit that will be projected on the exterior of the ROM's Michael-Lee Chin Crystal. Over 150 large scale colour and black and white images taken by seven international photojournalists and former United States Marine Brian Steidle (whose The Devil Came on Horseback screened at this year's Hot Docs) will be shown at night from dusk to 11pm near the ROM's entrance on Bloor Street. There will also be live music on Saturday the 8th and Friday the 14th. More details on the ROM's web site.

Meanwhile at TIFF, the documentary Darfur Now has its premier screening this Sunday at noon at the Varsity. Later that day, some of those involved in the film including actor Don Cheadle participate in one of TIFF's excellent discussions programmed this year. THE TIME IS NOW: A Conversation About Darfur should provide an excellent forum for discussion and audience questions about the crisis. (Isabel Bader, 5pm)
