Hot Toronto food pop-up announces they're taking 'a pause' just weeks after opening

A Toronto sandwich pop-up that opened to a ton of hype has now announced that they're taking 'a pause,' just over a month after opening.

It's been a rollercoaster year so far for Zontwiches founders Lucy Kirby (Breadhead) and Taryn Casey (T Biscuits), though I'm inclined to say it's been mostly ups — at least where Toronto foodies are concerned.

After announcing the failure-to-launch of what was to be Breadhead's brick-and-mortar location, they stirred up a ton of hype when they opened Zontwiches, a croissant sandwich concept that used the kitchen at Collective Arts Brewing.

To anyone lucky enough to get their hands on those golden brown bundles of joy served with sides of kale caesar, mac salad and tater tots, the shop was ostensibly a success.

Almost exactly a month after launching, though, the business took to Instagram to announce that the shop would be on hiatus for a yet-undetermined (or at least unannounced) amount of time.

"The past few weeks have been insaaaaaaane in the bakery, so for this reason we've decided to pause on our li'l sandwich project," the caption reads, adding that Lucy and Taryn are stepping back to focus on Breadhead.

"This was a super hard decision, but the right one," they go on to say. "This isn’t goodbye! It's just see ya later."

Luckily, you won't have to go far to get your hands on the legendary croissants that make up half the Zontwiches magic; Breadhead bakery treats can be found at a slew of local businesses like Reunion Coffee, General Assembly, The Drake Hotel and plenty more. You'll just have to assemble the sandwich yourself.

theGentries reached out to Zontwiches for more information about what the future of the sandwich shop holds, and when Toronto might be able to get their hands on a 'zontwich once more, but has not heard back at the time of publication.
