ttc subway closure weekend

8 TTC stations will shut down and grind Toronto to a halt this weekend

Get ready for a rough weekend on the TTC, as the transit agency will be shutting down subway service on Line 1 between Finch and St. Clair stations on Saturday and Sunday.

The latest closure will accommodate the commissioning of the Automated Train Control (ATC) signal system that has been the cause of regular weekend shutdowns in recent years. Once in service, the new ATC will allow for increased capacity on the line through increased train service.

Train service will be replaced by shuttle buses, though commuters will still be able to access most stations throughout the closure to purchase or reload Presto cards, or to connect with surface routes.

Regular subway service will resume at approximately 6 a.m.

And that won’t be the only closure affecting Line 1 this weekend.

Starting at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, the entire line from Vaughan Metropolitan Centre to Finch will be halted for the ATC commissioning, with shuttle buses operating in place of trains.

Things actually could have been even worse on Saturday, with a previously-scheduled single-day Line 1 closure from Lawrence to St. Clair cancelled by the TTC.

UPDATE: The TTC announced an early end to the weekend closure on Saturday evening.

And Line 2 commuters will also get a taste of the chaos, with a late opening planned on Sunday between St. George and Broadview stations, due to beam replacement work on the Prince Edward Viaduct.

Subway service on Line 2 is expected to begin by noon on Sunday.
