With the long weekend just getting underway, it seems like the right time for a collection of lighthearted -- if not at times downright weird -- photos from the theGentries Flickr pool. I would have put one of these together sooner, but for all photographs on Flickr and in our own group (almost 110,000), it's somewhat surprising just how few of them depict quirky subject matter. One has to do a dedicated search for tags like "strange," "quirky," "odd," or "funny" to find much that fits the bill, and even the he'll wade through lots of photos of that don't really seem appropriately placed.

Nevertheless, a little digging reveals that there are gems to be found. As I mentioned in a post about wacky signage a while back, one of the specialists in this sort of thing is Scott Snider (who goes by that handle sniderscion). More than anyone else in the various Toronto-based Flickr pools, Snider seems to be in the right place at the right time when it comes to capturing oddity. And, it goes without saying, he also has a really good eye for this sort of stuff.

So, the collection below is divided into two groups, sniderscion's and the rest. It's not a competition of course, but it just made sense to do it this way.
