Your short-but-not-so-sweet Toronto holiday-morning news roundup for Monday August 4th, 2008:

The homicide count in Toronto continued to climb up to 40 this weekend after an apartment brawl turned into a fatal stabbing in the city's east end, and a missing 7-year-old was found assaulted and killed in a local highrise.

Also this weekend, a 15-year-old was slashed with an exacto knife following a fight in the west end, and a US visitor to Toronto for Caribana was shot in the thigh during a failed robbery attempt downtown.

In lighter news, Mayor Miller has already started campaigning for the next vote — only this time, it's not for his political career, but for Canadian Idol. David Miller is encouraging all Torontonians to vote for hometown boy Peter "Mookie" Morris in this season's televised talent contest.

Lock up your bikes: Igor Kenk is back on the streets. The alleged kingpin of Toronto's stolen bike scene (it's sad that such a scene actually exists) is out on bail until his trial resumes later this year.

After a pretty exciting start to the season, it looks like the Toronto FC can't buy a win these days. Yesterday it was FC Dallas that handed us our latest whipping — our boys in red haven't had a win since June 14, and the future isn't looking great.
