A beloved mural by famed New York street artist Alec Monopoly was just painted over in Toronto.

While Monopoly's work has risen to massive international fame, here in Toronto, it seems we were over it.

The mural, which was located at 83 Portland Street, near the intersection with King Street West, is believed to have been originally painted around 2013.

It has been graffitied over in the past but carefully restored a few times over, so theGentries readers contacted us with surprise at seeing it painted over recently.

Monopoly, often seen in a top-hat like the Rich Uncle Pennybags character featured in his work, shot to fame for his murals, and eventually went on to do more commercial collabs with the likes of Paramount Pictures, Covergirl, and Vitamin Water.

More recently, he's entered the NFT space with his RAGS to RICHIE series featuring endless spins on a reworked Richie Rich character.

His work has sold for upwards if $100,000 CAD, which leaves us wondering if the tenants and owners of 83 Portland had any idea what they had on their hands.

The brand new mural that appeared this past week looks to be the work of local talent Jeff Blackburn, and commissioned to launch with the expansion of local mini donut chain 6ix Donuts.

I asked 6ix if they could shed any light on the new mural and they were tight-lipped, saying, "We can’t say too much until our grand opening downtown but the mural is not completed yet!"

Hopefully donut sales are good enough to make up for the loss of the Monopoly.

All jokes aside, the new mural does look pretty gorgeous, and adds some welcome colour to this condo-heavy block of Portland Street.
